This summer has been full of really important changes in my life. One of which, my Belize experience, affirmed my intense love and interest in archaeology, specifically New World archaeology. I never thought I would be able to pinpoint the moment I grew up, that I turned into something different from my previous state of being. For me, it was becoming more or less fearless. Also, very much linked to that, an easier acceptance of the ebb and flow of life, a shedding of selfishness, and, of course, a heightened sense of responsibility.
Today Tom and I decided to end our romantic relationship, after two and a half years and countless wonderful times. I think we saw it as a necessary step to becoming better than what we are, a step to becoming more. We were never absolutely good for each other, but we tried like hell and did as good as we could. I have nothing but love and appreciation, and a thousand memories of the best quality. I learned more about myself during this period in my life, and he did that for me. I'll always have love, and I'll always have his back if anyone decides to fuck with him. More than anything, I want to be his friend. I have high hopes; we ended it so well and on a positive if bittersweet note.
So, on a much happier note, we had a great and relaxing time in Vermont last week, and I got some great shots of him driving and otherwise having fun. The video of him driving is on VT-100, a 50 or so mile stretch
of gorgeous winding mountain road without cops and largely without other cars. Sorry about the poor quality, it's only with my PowerShot and I'm only really into video in clips, because clips are accessible. That's why I probably will never get a video camera, because I see how my family tapes so often and views so infrequently whatever random family gathering we shot.
Vermont is really one of my favorite states. We had a great time just driving, and that says a lot for a landscape I think, that even driving is a worthwhile pursuit, not means to an end. I'm happy with the pictures, most of which were taken from the passenger seat of Tom's little red Civic. There was one point at which we were stuck in really inexplicable traffic right next to a field of cows. Some of my favorite shots are from that 30 or so minutes. We also got to hit a couple very good restaurants, and the Ben & Jerry's Factory, which was awesome.
On the way home, we hit the best mini-golf course ever~! We even got a free game just for playing a game. I think the woman running the course liked us because we weren't 'vandalizing teenagers' who turned out to be quite a problem. The architecture on the course was so well done, and Tom was patient enough to pose with a lot of it, including with the giant lighthouse, which is, in fact, taller than him. Which is pretty tall. The lady said women win on that course 90% of the time. Of course, Tom won, but that's more about our comparative golf ability rather than gender roles.
So it was awesome to get away for a while, and I am looking forward to my junior year at college, although it does blow my mind a bit.
